Downton Abbey Christmas Special Screens In London; More To Come
Downstairs at Londons Mayfair Hotel was Downton Abbey central this afternoon as ITV screened the shows upcoming 2-hour Christmas Day special for the press. Several key cast members were there including Dan Stevens – who was just named a Man Booker Prize judge for 2012 and is starring in and producing Summer In February beginning next month along with Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol and Rob James-Collier, among others. The Julian Fellowes-created show has become a phenomenon in Britain where it recently concluded its second season on ITV with a 21% uptick over the first, making it the most popular drama series on Brit TV in over a decade. (In the States, season 2 kicks off on PBS in January.) A 3rd series begins shooting on February 13 and will be set in the early 20s, but producer Liz Trubridge couldnt give away many details saying theyd had just a glimpse of Fellowes first drafts. The 3rd season will also include a 2-hour telefilm, Trubridge confirmed to Deadline. Fans of the show (who, according to Siobhan Finneran – aka devious ladys maid OBrien include Tom Hanks) should be mighty satisfied with the special screened today that takes place over a tumultuous holiday period in 1919. With regard to continuing the show, Trubridge told Deadline that its a wait-and-see game since commissioning is done at the end of the current season. Im sure wed all want to do it, she said. Coyle said the cast had been optioned only through 3 seasons and joked he wouldnt mind a spinoff for his character called Mr Bates Investigates. Meanwhile, the busy Stevens said he might look for more producing projects depending on how Summer In February goes and told Deadline, Im just happy to be booked through October.

Ryan Seacrest as Potential Matt Lauer 'Today' Replacement: What the Media Is Saying
Chuck star Zachary Levi is the latest celebrity to host Spike TV's Video Game Awards show, which will be broadcast live on December 10 at 8pm ET from Los Angeles. Levi, who is finishing the final season of Chuck, follows in the footsteps of famous gamers like Jack Black and Samuel L. Jackson as host of the event.our editor recommends'Chuck' Star Zachary Levi to Host Spike TV's Video Game Awards (Exclusive)'Chuck's' Vik Sahay Wraps on Lester: 'Don't Know If I'll Ever Feel the Same Singing Again' Mark Burnett (Survivor), executive producer of this year's ceremony, reached out to Levi to bring a gamers' sensibility to the show. The actor talks about the emergence of video games as an art form and the future of interactive entertainment in this exclusive interview. PHOTOS: 10 Broadcast and Cable TV Show Most Watched By Men The Hollywood Reporter: Why did you decide to host this year's VGAs? Zachary Levi: I want to pay homage and tribute to all the developers and gaming companies that have continued to mold my own life and my entertainment. THR: What role will celebrities play in the VGAs this year? Levi: I personally don't want it to be an awards show where it's just about putting celebrities in there for celebrities' sake. I'm hoping that the celebrities that I get are all people who have some kind of legitimate love or involvement in the world of gaming, as I do. That's at least where I stand on it. "I think it will ultimately have a resonance and a weight that some of the other more, I suppose, prestigious awards shows have now." THR: Do you believe the VGAs will eventually become for games what the Academy Awards or Emmys are for film and television? Levi: I believe that if the VGAs continue to do right by the gaming community, be true to it, cater to gamers, and have that cool, fun, atmosphere, but respect for the genre itself, then they will just continue to gain respect as an awards show. I think it will ultimately have a resonance and a weight that some of the other more, I suppose, prestigious awards shows have now. THR: How do you see the VGAs comparing to other awards shows you've been involved with? Levi: A lot of it is just patting each other on the back, whatever the industry is, whether it's the Emmys, the Oscars, or the Video Game Awards. I think one of the most important things is that it's entertaining, fun, and pays tribute to those that have been continuing to lead the charge in whatever that medium is. THR: How have you seen the importance of story evolve in gaming today? Levi: Having a great story line is important because games are becoming more and more like these interactive movies that you spend a lot of your time with. I think the Uncharted games have done an incredible job at that. The guys at Naughty Dog have just continued to make a fantastic title. Obviously, Infinity Ward and Treyarch are constantly going back and forth and bringing us a lot of fun in their first-person world with Call of Duty games. And Bethesda (Softworks) continues to up the ante with the Elder Scrolls games like Oblivion and the new Skyrim. THR: Now that you're wrapping up Chuck, what's next for you? Levi: As somebody who works in entertainment and is an avid gamer, I have a lot of ideas. I really want to start making and bridging the gap between gaming entertainment and live action entertainment. I want to start making interactive shows where you're watching actors like myself portray characters that, once we go into battle, you can be prompted to either opt-out or opt-in to controlling the outcome of that battle...almost like a choose your adventure. That's where I see the future going. The more interactive you can make entertainment, or even giving people options of passive or active entertainment, the better. I love what Kinect is doing. You don't need a remote control anymore. You can either voice command or wave your hand around and be able to tap into wherever and whenever you want. It's fascinating. THR: Gamers have been streaming content in record numbers online. How do you see that impacting the future of television? Levi: For years now, my philosophy has been that your television will only be a word for your monitor. It won't be a service, necessarily, anymore. Everything will just be plugged in, as you're going to be streaming everything. It's going to open up and really broaden the world of entertainment for independent entertainment producers to be able to essentially make whatever they want to make and sell it directly to their fan base, which is going to be incredible. If they're making something that's good, people can find it and watch it. THR: What does this mean for the current prime time television model? Levi: Television will continue to exist in the model that we see it, but more and more it will become more about sporting events and reality competitions; things that people have to watch live. As an advertiser, more and more people are DVRing their programming or watching it online, you're not getting your money out of the advertisement investment, so it's going to change the model drastically. Glee Club TV Competition Shows in Copyright Infringement Dispute
Fox Searchlight's Shame opens Dec. 2 with a restrictive NC-17 rating, but that may be a good thing for similarly classified films in the future.our editor recommendsNudity, Three-Ways, Hints of Incest: A Studio's Plan to Sell 'Shame' to Oscar'Shame' Officially Rated NC-17FEINBERG FORECAST: Can 'Shame' Crack the Major Categories Despite NC-17 Rating? National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) president John Fithian tells the Associated Press that the Steve McQueen-directed drama "is potentially an important step in the legitimate use of the NC-17." STORY: Nudity, Three-Ways, Hints of Incest: A Studio's Plan to Sell 'Shame' to Oscar "There just aren't very many movies released in the NC-17 rating anymore. We get maybe one or two a year. Filmmakers and movie studios are inappropriately afraid of the rating." Fithian reveals that in a recent survey, 97 of 100 theater owners said they would play an NC-17 movie. He argues that filmmakers and studios should embrace, not fight, the classification, "What we currently have is a system that's slightly flawed in the reluctance of filmmakers and distributors to use the NC-17. PHOTOS: 'Shame' Star Carey Mulligan at THR's Actress Roundtable "What they'll do is cut and trim and try to cram a movie into the R rating category so that it escapes the NC-17, and that's not a legitimate use of the system. We end up with a very broad R category." Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian thinks Shame can capitalize on its uncommon status. He told AP, "R-rated movies are a dime a dozen. If Fox Searchlight can harness the power of the NC-17, they can turn it into a plus." VIDEO: 'Shame' Director Steve McQueen at THR's Directors Roundtable The MPAA said that the drama earned the rating because of "some explicit sexual content," which includes full-frontal nudity, oral sex performed on men and women, and group sex. Joan Graves, head of the group's ratings system arm, believes the "stigma" of NC-17 is due in part to negative press. She told AP, "I've always considered it a shame that for some reason some people consider it (a death sentence), and I blame the media in a way because they always act like it's gotten the kiss of death." "I think NC-17 is a badge of honor, not a scarlet letter. We believe it is time for the rating to become usable in a serious manner," Searchlight president Steve Gilula told The Hollywood Reporter. "The sheer talent of the actors and the vision of the filmmaker are extraordinary. It's not a film that everyone will take easily, but it certainly breaks through the clutter and is distinctive and original. It's a game changer." NBC Picks Up Imagines Sarah Silverman Comedy To Pilot
EXCLUSIVE: NBC continues its aggressive push this development season with early pilot orders. The latest project to get the green light is the comedy starring Sarah Silverman, which the network landed in August after a bidding war with a hefty put pilot commitment. The half-hour, from 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV, is a pet project of Imagine principal Ron Howard. Loosely based on Silvermans life, the untitled single-camera comedy stars the comedian as a woman readjusting to the single life after a decade-long live-in relationship. Silverman wrote the script with Dan Sterling and Jon Schroeder, who were writer-producers on her self-titled Comedy Central series. Silverman, Sterling and Imagine’s Howard, Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producing, with Schroeder serving as co-exec producer. The order for the Sarah Silverman project follows NBC’s recent pilot pickups for Beautiful People, a futuristic drama by Michael McDonald, and comedies Isabel and Save Me, which are now casting. Additionally, the J.J. Abrams/Eric Kripke adventure thriller Revolution and crime drama Blue Tilt have pilot production commitments at the network. NBC now houses 3 female comedians known for their raunchy, no-holds-barred standup: Silverman, Whitney Cummings, creator and star of her own eponymous comedy series, which has received a full-season pickup by the network, and Chelsea Handler, who is behind the midseason series Are You There, Chelsea?, which will be paired with Whitney.

Has Dr. Drew Sold Out?
Dr. Drew Pinsky On a recent episode of Dr. Drew Pinsky's new daytime show Lifechangers, 17-year-old fame oddity Courtney Stodden laid on an examination table in front of a live studio audience while an ultrasound technician poked and prodded her before making this pronouncement: Stodden's breasts are real!VIDEO: Are Courtney Stodden's boobs real? (And spectacular?)The whole spectacle seemed a bit beneath Pinsky, who is often considered the stark voice of reason in an age of overexposed celebrities and tabloid rumors. Had Pinsky officially sold out? Pinsky acknowledges that he agreed to "settle the score" regarding Stodden's plastic surgery, but that, in exchange Stoddard and her husband, Lost actor Doug Hutchison, 51, were supposed to discuss their controversial January-December relationship. It didn't work out that way. "We didn't set it up properly; we didn't get anywhere in understanding their relationship," Pinsky confesses. "So yea, it was... 'one of those episodes.' It's a new show and we're still trying to figure out how to do this stuff."In his defense, Pinsky probably can't be expected to get it right every time. Between Lifechangers, Loveline, his self-titled show on HLN, his part-time medical practice, and Celebrity Rehab, the guy's got a lot on his plate.Sean Young, Michael Lohan and Bai Ling check in to Celebrity RehabNext up: Rehab's sixth season premieres Sunday, Nov. 20 on VH1, and it's being called Celebrity Rehab "Revisited." Unlike previous seasons, Pinsky will check in on some of the show's most notorious former patients, including Rodney King, Andy Dick, Heidi Fleiss, and Janice Dickinson. When Pinsky, 53, was pitched the series five years ago, he doubted it could ever work. He worried about two things: the cameras and the motivation. "Most of the people come on to this program because they want to be on TV and they want to make money," he says. "I don't really want to help people that are not interested in getting well."Check out our holiday guideFive seasons later, though, Pinsky understands the show's effectiveness. "So many of the patients ended up really valuing the treatment that they got," he says. "And even if they didn't fully embrace sobriety, they still had a transformative experience." Take Tom Sizemore, for example, he says. "Tom is an amazing success story. We worked with him for years before he ever came on Celebrity Rehab and we could never get him sober. And by the grace of God he got sober on the show - and that's amazing."Pinsky's track record is comparable to that of non-celebrity rehab programs: Some stay sober, but many continue to battle the disease. The show features both eventualities. For every Sizemore success story, there are also tragic endings. Mike Starr, of the band Alice in Chains, cleaned up on Season 3; less than a year later, he died at age 44. Those closest to Starr say he died of a drug overdose.Former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr dies at 44"Our original intent was just to show the work we do," he says. "We got tired of people not understanding what treatment was, and how difficult, painful, and tough it is."Pinsky insists that his show is 100 percent real - no producers meddling with the patients. "If we ever hear of a story producer pulling somebody aside the way they do on other shows, I would bring the wrath of God down on them," he says. "These are patients in a hospital. They're sick and they're unhappy. If they get near the patients, I will walk off the set."Celebrity Rehab Revisited premieres Sunday, Nov. 20 at 9/8c on VH1.

George Clooney's 'The Descendants' Opens Strong
Behold, the energy of George Clooney. Based on the Hollywood Reporter, the actor's latest movie, 'The Descendants,' is off and away to a powerful begin in limited release. Despite opening in just five theaters on Wednesday evening, the film made $39,777, with typically $7,955 per location. That may not appear like a great deal of dough (specially when you consider the possibility $125+ million opening of 'Breaking Beginning, Part I' a few days ago), but it is pretty solid thinking about the amount of theaters. To place it in perspective, 'J. Edgar' made $52,645 from seven theaters to have an average $7,521 if this opened up in limited release last Wednesday, that is just beneath the 'Descendants' haul. (Take that Leo!) Starring Clooney, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Shailene Woodley (who spoke about Clooney's fart machine the 2009 week), 'The Descendants' follows the storyline of Matt King (Clooney) who looks to reunite together with his kids after his wife falls right into a coma. The film will open countrywide November. 23. [via THR] [Photo: Fox Searchlight] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Hollywood Worries About Weak Box Office: Real Steel #1 After Footloose Stumbles; The Thing #3; The Big Year Comics Bomb
SATURDAYPM,4TH UPDATE (includes full analysis): Seriously, do movie moguls get into showbiz just to greenlight unnecessary remakes of teen movies, prequels to horror movies, or unfunny comedies that humiliate big stars like Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin?Apparently so,based onthis weekend’s trio of major opening films. Maybe that’s why audiences are rebelling.Paramount’srebooted Footloose was sucker-punched byDreamWorks/Disney’s bot-battling holdoverReal Steal for No. 1.Butthe truly alarming news is howvery weak the North American box officeperformedagain.I’ve been reporting how younger males — which used to be Hollywoods target audience — havebeen no longer consistently (and indiscriminately) going to the movies since August.Asa longtime studio exec worried out loud to me Friday night: “I’m really concerned about how soft things are.I’m sitting here looking at grossesand I’m concerned for the Industry. What’s worrying meis where are those hardcore movie fans at this point?” Well, I say Hollywood should expect the worst when they release a succession of mostly dreadful pics. This weekend’s total gross won’t edge much over $80M — which is a whopping-35% from last year when Jackass 3D opened to $50M. (I know what you’re thinking: Who are the jackasses now?)This is not a good situation for the studios to be in as moviegoing enters the all-important holiday season: 1. Real Steel (DreamWorks/Disney) Week 2 [3,440 Theaters] Friday $4.4M, Saturday $7.2M, Weekend $16M (-41%), Estimated Cume $51.7M Nice hold, and this feel-good film is now successfully marketing itself as family fare. Witness the +64% jump from Friday to Saturday because parents and kids were attending matinees. But this costly pic is still not the big hit DreamWorks needs it to be. 2. Footloose (Paramount) NEW [3,549 Theaters] Friday $5.6M, Saturday $6.3M,Weekend $15.5M Ask Paramount why a reboot of Footloose was even necessary and the sheepish answer is that the 2011 version cost just $24M and the bosses expected to make their money back thisfirst weekend. But they didn’t: it’s a really mediocreopening even if the pic is #1.”Ultimately there are a number of elements to a studio’s portfolio,” one exec explained to me. “Some movies are original. Some movies are risks. And sometimes you look for opputunities for good investments like this.”This spreadsheetmentality is exactly the sort of bloodlessfilmmaking which drives creativescrazy about Hollywood. But it’s not only the moguls at fault:Craig Brewer went from writing and directing such edgy fare as Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow to helming and earning a screenplay credit on thisscript fromDean Pitchford who authored the book of the Footloose musical on Broadway. (I can only surmise that Brewer needed a gig.) Of course the studio has told me 4 times in 12 hours that audiences gave the remake an ‘A’ CinemaScore which justified thepositive reviews of this virtual shot-by-shot update. Marketed first as an inspirational story of empowerment, the campaign was craven enoughto sell Footloose-styled sneakers on the Home Shopping Network. Trafficat firstlagged despite high awareness of the iconic original untilwannasee picked upat the end because of the relentless promotion. There had been an extensive word-of-mouth screening program for young girls during the summer at places like cheerleading camps and then a follow-upFacebook/Twitter campaign to get them talking about this virtual shot-by-shot update.Exit polls showed it appealed tofemales (75%) and captured 28% of the teenmarket. As many as 60%of moviegoers were over age 25 and 46% over age 35because of the nostalgia factor. As expected, the film with its more fundamentalism-friendly makeover played best in theMidwest, Southwest, and South: theAmerican heartlandwhich Hollywood generally derides as ‘flyover’ country. As a result, Paramount bought deeper in Southern/Middle American 30 local TV markets and outdoor to take advantage of this films appeal there. For instance, the studio putkey art on over 1 million Greyhound bus jackets, withFootloose posters and counter cards at 90+ depots. I’m toldthe 20 highest grossing locationsFriday were inSalt Lake City,Oklahoma City,Knoxville,Kansas City, and San Antonio. And remember that Paramount’s Viacom sister company is Country Music Television where there was considerable hardsell including aFootloose takeover, a CMT-hostedNashville film premiere, andan on-air Footloose Week. Also utilized was sister company MTV’sVMA Awardsincluding pushes duringthe pre-VMA original Jersey Shore, VMA Pre-Show, and during the live VMA show. MTV also promotedvignettesshowing how MTVs talent/prime time shows Cut Loose. Still another sister company, Nickelodeon, showed custom spots featuring Nickelodeons star Victoria Justice talking about her role on the Footloose soundtrack.Paramount used all those TV dance contests to pitch the pic, kicking off thecampaign with the debut of the Footloose trailer on June 22nd’s So You Think You Can Dance and culminating with lead Julianne Hough’semotion-exploiting stunt returning toOctober 11th’s Dancing With The Stars to perform a 4-minute number to Footloose music with co-star Kenny Wormaid.Speaking of Wormaid, he’s no Kevin Bacon (who blessed this reboot). After seeingsomething like 30 TV spots of him gyrating, I still can’t pick this new guy out of a police lineup. 3. The Thing (Universal) NEW [2,996 Theaters] Friday$3.2M, Saturday $3.4M,Weekend$8.5M Like Footloose, Universal’s The Thing was low cost with low turnout. Audiences gave the No. 2 movie only a ‘B-’ CinemaScore. And yet they were primed for a Halloween-timed horror film. (The economy is frightening enough for me…) This prequel to John Carpenters 1982 film –which itself was a remake of the 1951′s The Thing From Another World — was supposed to be a suspenseful take on the shape-shifting creatures origins set in icy Antarctica. Tracking suggested the thriller could open in the low double digits. But it underperformed to only single digits. Universal integrated the moviewith wannabe stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton from new director Matthijs Van Heijningen into its famed Halloween Horror Nights withmazes at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resorts (September 23-October 31).Even the junket was held in the Hollywood maze. So what does this have to do with filmmaking? Nothing. And that’s the point. I bet hundreds of the millions of user-generated scare videos uploaded at ItWillBecomeYou.com were better than this pic. Substantial online resources were utilized like social networking and gaming and full-page takeovers and custom creative on sites like XBox, Vevo, Break, IGN, Metacafe, ESPN, Syfy, YouTube, Yahoo, AOL, Fandango, Movietickets and others. The studio released a red-band online trailer for fans of harder horror, as well as a green-band, using the familiar synth score from the original film. There was a customized outreach to the Hispanic market, who typically overindex for horror films, around the idea of “La Cosa Pronto Vivira En Ti”. Universal is distributing The Thing for Morgan Creek in 28 international territories including UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, and Latin America. 4. The Ides Of March (Cross Creek/Sony) Week 2 [2,199 Theaters] Friday $2.2M, Saturday $3.3M,Weekend $7.5M (-29%), Cume $22.2M Excellent hold for George Clooney’s intelligent political thriller that adults are still discovering and welcoming. 5. The Dolphin Tale (Alcon/Warner Bros) Week 4 [3,286 Theaters] Friday $1.6M, Saturday $2.8M,Weekend $6.3M,Cume $58.6M 6. Moneyball (Sony) Week 4 [2,840 Theaters] Friday $1.7M, Saturday $2.5M,Weekend $5.5M, Estimated Cume $57.7M 7. 50/50 (Summit) Week 3[2,391 Theaters] Friday $1.3M, Saturday $1.8M,Weekend $4.5M,Cume $24.5M 8. The Big Year (Fox) NEW [2,150 Theaters] Friday $1.1M,Saturday $1.3M,Weekend$3.2M I still can’t believe that big stars Owen Wilson, Jack Black, and Steve Martin, or David Frankel who directed big hits The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, could possibly have opened a movie that bombed this big-time at the box office. Yet first Friday’s and then Saturday’sgrosses were tantamount to only $1 million per movie star. Geez. I agree with the reviewer who complained that the trio have contracted the “comedy-suppressing disease” demonstrating “terminal blandness”. Even audiences weren’t amused and gave it only a ‘B-’ CinemaScore. The Big Year would be a come-to-Jesus moment in big Fox filmmaking– until you realize that there have been so many of these come-to-Jesus moments in Fox filmmaking in recent years. Yet the studio still refuses to change the way it makes creative decisions. (To be fair, Twentieth at least madesuccessful prequels this summer…) Credited screenwriter Howard Franklin’s script is a fictionalized adaptation of Mark Obmascik’s non-fiction book of the same name about of all things – birdwatching — but more so about a mid-life crisis, a late-life crisis, and a no-life crisis among men. Co-produced by Ben Stiller’s and Stuart Cornfeld’s production banner Red Hour based at Twentieth Century Fox, this is a pic that “maybe was too sophisticated and subtle for a big studio release and probably should have been a Searchlight movie,” one of my insiders tells me. “But Twentieth made it because of our relationship with the director who made Prada and Marley for us, both of which were quirky adult movies, too, and a ton of money.” The Big Year cost $41M before co-financier Dune’s investment and Canadian tax credits, which brought the studio’s stake down to $28M — or so Fox claims. The studio had little or no expectations for The Big Year this weekend. “Its a good film that has proved impossible to market because of the subject matter. The bird-watching aspect just seems to repel people” one source told me. When I saw the trailers and TV ads, I didn’t realize what the pic was about: just that the combination of Owen, Jack, and Steve seemed like the kind of adut comedy I would want to see. Problem is, reviews were mixed: The NY Times really liked it, for example, but other influencers not so much. Recognizing that adults, and men especially, is a slow build audience, marketing was targeted to them. But why should I bother giving details of the plan when it was an epic fail? 9. Courageous (Sherwood/Sony) Week 3 [1,214 Theaters] Friday $1M, Saturday $1.2M,Weekend $3.2M, Cume $21.2M 10. Dream House (Universal) Week 3 [2,172 Theaters] Friday $740K, Saturday $1.2M,Weekend $2.6M, Estimated Cume$18.5M
Taken 2 plot revealed
The tremendous success of Taken guaranteed a sequel and it seems as if Liam Neeson's character will be butting heads with more bad guys in Taken 2 around this time next year. While we can't officially reveal when that hard hitting film will be in your local multiplex, we do know when the Yanks will be getting it and that's normally a pretty good guide: 5 October 2012.After all, we're unlikely to get it ahead of the US - as we did with the first film - now it's become a successful franchise.Olivier Megaton (The Transporter 3, Colombiana) will be sitting behind the camera, while Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen share scriptwriting duties again. There's also now a plot synopsis for the film..."Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge, and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one."Seems like Neeson has the same way of attracting trouble as John McClane does in Die Hard movies. The stories those two could tell over a beer!

John Lasseter had the late, great Steve Jobs on his mind Tuesday night when accepting Variety's inaugural Creative Leadership Award at the Hollywood's New Leaders confab. In addressing the many up-and-coming execs at the event, held at SoHo House West Hollywood, the Pixar topper quoted Jobs, who saw auds' relationship with brands as being like a bank account: "You make deposits" with good product. "You make withdrawals" with bad product. And if "you make more withdrawals than deposits, you're bankrupt." Lasseter's voice broke as he spoke of Jobs' role as a mentor to the Pixar team, and how strongly he encouraged them to pursue their once-elusive goal of making computer-animated feature films."The only thing Steve Jobs ever asked of us was to 'Make it great.' Everything we do follows his simple words," added Lasseter, who urged the industry's new leaders to be proud of their work.Later in the evening, Lasseter reminisced about making it in the film biz. He knew he'd arrived in Hollywood, oddly enough, while in Dallas."I was changing planes at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. I got off the airplane, and there was a little boy standing there with his mom holding a Woody the Cowboy doll. It was the first time I'd see a character I created in the hands of a little boy far, far away from Pixar."Lasseter's signature Hawaiian shirts could be another sign he's made it. The Pixar topper revealed that a shirt designer in Honolulu "does a Hawaiian shirt for each one of my movies," and he dutifully showed off his "Cars 2" shirt. Hugh Jackman's 'Real Steel' Hero Is 'The Anti-Father'
Hugh Jackman is, potentially, a perfect guy. He sings, he dances, they can do comedy and drama and action and romance, hes easy about the eyes. However, many importantly, hes a enjoyable guy. What exactly is all this-around good bloke doing playing bad father Charlie Kenton in solid Steel? Or Drover australia wide? Or Wolverine? Jackman told MTV News he was elevated being polite to people, be nice, kind, sincere. Because of his natural gentlemanly condition, hes attracted to figures that are substantially under perfect. In my opinion Im pretty boring, Jackman mentioned. I similar to the edgy, slightly wilder people. He mentioned that his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, was removed from 12 schools or something like that like this. In Solid Steel Jackman plays the anti-father. He mentioned, Nearly all my moments are with my boy who I havent seen since birth, and Im really mean to him virtually the whole movie. It absolutely was a welcome departure for your actor and father of two, whose personal nurturing philosophy prevents him from delivering any unnecessary nastiness. You have to say things sometimes that you just understood if youd mentioned them would place them in therapy with an extra 2 decades. And you also dont. You shove it lower. Despite his onscreen obnoxiousness, Jackman didnt avoid showing Real Steel to his kids, who've been intrigued rather than delay by Kentons inadequate nurturing capabilities. They were like, And then we can drink sodas each morning? Reveal everything you consider Jackman's "Real Steel" performance inside the comments section and also on Twitter!

Warner Bros eyeing an A-list director for Twilight Zone movie
According to a report by Variety, Warner Bros have set their sights high for the new take on Twilight Zone, with Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay and Alfonso Cuarón on the directorial wish list.Although, for this version, WB aren't looking for the directors to tackle a segment each as a part of a portmanteau piece; they want one person to helm a single-storyline feature (unlike the 1983 version).Nolan is apparently the favourite, not surprising given his track record with the studio, but Variety suggests he might be put off by the film's similarity to Inception. It's also hard to imagine Nolan taking on a project that he hasn't had total creative control over at this stage in his career.WB are said to be keen to work with Bay, and Cuarón has history with the studio, having recently shot Gravity for them (and let's not forget his work on Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban). Also in the mix is Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Rupert Wyatt, who's described as the "dark horse" after the success (critical and commercial) of that movie this summer. It's hard to imagine Bay generating spooks with any kind of subtlety, whereas we know Cuarón can create atmosphere to spare. It'd also be nice to see Wyatt given the reins on another big project.Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way is also producing duty, although there's no hint at a release date for the new Twilight Zone yet.

Robert Downey Jr Eyes Perry Mason
He's developing a new star vehicle...Having launched two franchises with Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr is looking to keep the iconic roles coming by developing a new movie based on the Perry Mason character originally created by novelist Erle Stanley Gardner. Warner Bros., which has produced the Sherlock films, is involved with the Mason development, kicked off once estate attorney Joe Horacek nabbed the rights to the character. Downey and co-producer David Gambino have come up with a story idea and are now in the process of finding a writer to turn it into a screenplay. While the character of Perry Mason is best known to audiences through the Raymond Burr-starring TV series, the legal eagle actual first stalked the courts in Gardner's books, the first of which was published in 1933. The author went on to write 82 novels and many short stories, which revolved around Mason, secretary Della Street, private eye Paul Drake and the team's legal nemesis, Hamilton Burger. And this won't be the first time that Mason has been turned into another format, since more than 3,257 episodes of a radio series were produced beginning in 1937 and Warners made six previous movies.Downey plans to return the character to his 1930s LA roots, which is hardly surprising given the success he's had with his other period character...Watch Transformers 3 Online

Ryan Murphy and Kaira Falchuk: The 6 Items That Inspired American Horror Story
American Horror Story If pressed, you can boil lower the premise of Ryan Murphy and Kaira Falchuk's new Foreign exchange series, American Horror Story, with a simple setup: The fragile Harmons -- Ben (Dylan McDermott), a counselor, his wife Vivien (Connie Britton), in addition to their daughter Crimson (Taissa Farmiga) - go to La after Ben comprises a dreadful mistake that jeopardizes their family members. The only real problem? Their creepy home is probably not where to start again. But "creepy" doesn't begin to tell it. There is a barrel of bizarre happening here, which is all shipped fast and furious inside the first episode (premiering Wednesday, March. 5 at 10/9c) when the Harmons meet their peculiar neighbors. They include bigoted Southern mother nearby Constance (Jessica Lange) and her special-needs daughter Adelaide (Jamie Maker), which has a knack for predicting disaster Ray (Denis O'Hare), the burn victim who begins to stalk Ben Tate (Evan Peters), Ben's teenage mental patient with homicidal dreams as well as the housekeeper Moira (Frances Conroy and Alexandra Breckenridge), who appears a good way to Vivien and Crimson, but another to Ben. Furthermore, you will find something seriously wrong while using Harmons' basement (and whatever is dwelling inside it), the strange rubber suit inside the attic as well as the polarizing house mural on the ground floor. Start searching: Ryan Murphy's "psychosexual thriller" American Horror Story: It's not Glee! The show's designers discuss a range of inspirations when asked for how they emerged utilizing their dark and twisted " " new world " ". Listed below are the six that separated itself when Murphy and Falchuk spoke with reporters the other day undertaking a screening in the series' second episode: 1. Infidelity: Before identifying to use inside the horror genre, Murphy preferred to understand more about marriage and what cheating gives rapport. "I had been really taking into consideration the theme of infidelity and the way that could destroy and haunt you," he mentioned. Inside the second episode, Ben's sins go back to, ahem, haunt him when his former lover (and student) Hayden re-gets into his existence asking for help. Among another screwy occasions in the hour, "most likely probably the most frightening factor in my opinion inside the episode comes about when Hayden starts crying inside the apartment. You're like, 'Oh, he's really screwed,'" Falchuk mentioned. "In my opinion, this is actually the moment where you stand like, 'This can be a guy which has introduced the horror into his home.' Which is the idea of any haunted house movie. It is not only the haunted house, it comes down lower to losing your home. It comes down lower not to feeling safe inside the most rut.Inch "What about we they just leave?" Ryan Murphy promises solutions in Horror Story 2. Jessica Lange: Her character -- "our Tennessee Williams factor," Murphy mentioned -- might be yanking the strings inside the Harmons' new existence, but that wasn't always this program. Before Lange signed to the project, the role of Constance was simply a couple of short moments inside the pilot. Now, she "holds all the cards," he mentioned. "We really enlarged the part and written all people other moments [on her behalf. Once she heard the street, 'Don't cause me to feel kill you again,' she was like, 'OK, well, how do you not?'" Constance was heavily affected with what Murphy calls among his finest theatrical encounters, seeing Lange in the Streetcar Named Desire in NY. "I saw her take action two occasions. I used to be passionate about this, I used to be passionate about her," he mentioned. 3. The Evening Stalker and Dark Shadows: While American Horror Story is billed just like a psychosexual thriller and bears little resemblance with the idea to show, both freaked Murphy out becoming an adult - which he loved it! "The most popular understanding about my grandmother and grand daddy was watching Dark Shadows, they assisted me watch. That's how they punished me," he mentioned. "It's a very seminal feeling personally, peeking behind a chair and loving that feeling of being scared." 4. "Go West, youthful guy": The idea of Manifest Future goes submit hands utilizing their haunted house tale - really! -- because, as Murphy put it, "there's forget about room [within the u . s . states, typically. Wherever you're going, wherever your home is, you will be dealing with somebody who was there prior to deciding to in addition to their recollections in addition to their traumas in addition to their lives." Audiences will dsicover precisely which kind of traumas the house has triggered on its previous residents, too its history is looked into inside the opening segment of each and every episode (Episode 1 begins in 1978 and Episode 2 in 1968). The Next hour could possibly get into its very roots in 1924. "Lily Rabe stars since the lady this house was created for. You will notice the roots of why did this house become cursed, with techniques," Murphy mentioned. Ryan Murphy talks new Foreign exchange show American Horror Story: Everyone was freaked through the creature 5. Modern crime. There's grounds grisly procedurals like Criminal Minds and Law & Order: SVU be of the same quality simply because they do. According to Murphy, there's an appetite with this: "You will discover still tour buses which feel the Sharon Tate house, you will discover clubs dedicated to famous murder hobbies... In my opinion it's type of a means to circumvent your individual anxiety in very anxious occasions." However, while people will die in American Horror Story - some in graphically violent ways - "it is not a murder every week show, it is not... The show is rooted in something so real and we're not trying to become gratuitous only to shock people," Murphy mentioned. Rather, be ready to see plenty of artful imagery acquired from Japanese and also the the spanish language language horror films. 6. Halloween: It's among Murphy's passions. "I used to be stated to become born on Halloween. I didn't emerge in my deadline,Inch he mentioned, disappointed. He's only too happy to experience a friendly ghost in your home -- "I'm an extremely awesome presence. I'm my leg being touched throughout the evening once i sleep and frequently it wakes me up. It's just strange, however never feel afraid," he mentioned - and zilch thrilled him greater than what he did last Halloween: "I removed my deck, I visited dinner, I came home which i seen The Walking Dead which i'd a good time. I loved it. I like that feeling of the fall in October, watching frightening movies." Compared to that finish, he and Falchuk authored a couple-part Halloween special for your series. "The initial factor we discovered previously... is always that on Halloween...the dead can roam freely," Murphy mentioned. "While you're reading that, you're like, well, this can be a two-parter." American Horror Story premieres March. 5 at 10/9c on Foreign exchange. Will you watch?

5 A Few Things I Learned at TIFF: Morbid Laughs, Maniacal Women, Rogue Planets, and much more
The Toronto Worldwide Film Festival continues through Sunday, however the lengthy opening weekend is definitely the most popular, starriest segment. Oscar challengers 'Moneyball,' 'Drive', 'The Ides of March,' and 'The Descendants' have previously had their premieres, along with a-listers from Brangelina to Bono have braved the gantlet of paparazzi and lightly persistent Canadians angling for any photo, an autograph, or simply an amiable jerk. There's a significant amount of happening for just about any one individual to soak up everything, but listed here are five a few things i learned from my four-day visit. 1. It's awesome to laugh and cry simultaneously. A couple of the festival's best-received films, Alexander Payne's 'The Descendants' and Jonathan Levine's 50/50,' turn audience people into emotional wrecks, laughing about a minute, crying the following, then laughing, then crying, and so on. Both in movies, dying casts an earlier shadow: in 'The Descendants,' George Clooney's wife makes its way into a coma within the first moments from the movie, as well as in '50/50,' Frederick Gordon Levitt discovers he has late-stage cancer a little way in to the first act. As the movies proceed along completely different pathways, they share an over-all theme: if the reaper comes for you personally in thirty days or 3 decades, time to begin appreciating existence and also the people you like is appropriate now. It's that enlightened perspective, actually, that enables these phones stay away of tricky plot products -- there is no mind-faking, no real surprise twists, just several intelligent, witty people doing their finest to process some seriously raw feelings. Clooney is really a lock to have an Oscar jerk, and i believe Frederick Gordon Levitt could sneak up there too. And do not count out newcomer Shailene Woodley (most widely known formerly for that ABC Family series 'The Secret Existence of the American Teenager'), who provides a breakout performance as Clooney's fierce, funny 17-year-old daughter. I had been only sorry that Gus Van Sant's 'Restless,' which stars Mia Wasikowska like a cool cancer victim who stays her last days on the planet connecting with Henry Hopper (Dennis's boy), could not get this to the entire year when a trio of movies asked dying towards the party within the first act. Alas, the film's chief achievement would be to induce the titular sensation in audience people. 2. Crazy may be the new black. David Cronenberg -- who, I came across, includes a star on King Street's endearingly modest Canadian Walk of Fame -- is renowned for getting the crazy, but rarely comes with an actress gone for this with quite as much gusto as Keira Knightley in the Carl Jung biopic 'A Harmful Method.' Playing a kinky Russian hysteric who involves the famous Swiss psychotherapist (Michael Fassbender) looking for treatment, Knightley explodes to the screen having a violent bout of shrieking, writhing, and jaw-jutting contorting which makes Regan from 'The Exorcist' seem like Maria von Trapp. In Lars Von Trier's profoundly disturbing 'Melancholia,' meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst turns the amount lower and also the pathos in place as her character comes from blushing bride to helpless wretch -- simply to emerge like a freakishly calm Cassandra. There might not be room for Kikis within the best actress category, so I am placing my early Oscar wager on Ms. Dunst. 3. The 90s were two decades ago. Not just one, but two documentaries only at that year's festival revisit pivotal albums from 1991. The very first, Davis Guggenheim's 'From heaven Lower,' describes how U2 fought against off exhaustion and inventive stagnation in the finish from the eighties by moving towards the recently reunited Berlin and recording 'Achtung, Baby' -- therefore fulfilling Bono's need to "grab a f-king chainsaw and cut lower the 'Joshua Tree.'" The very best sequence within the film uses archival audio to exhibit the way the greatly effective ballad "One" automatically sprang forth throughout a jam session on which would become "Mysterious Ways," however i also loved the band's refreshing shows of self-deprecation. There's much discuss how embarrassed all of them were through the 1989 documentary 'Rattle & Hum,' that we really loved -- being 14 at that time and not aware of precisely how silly and bombastic the entire factor appeared towards the band's peers. Oddly, Guggenheim explained he loved 'Rattle & Hum' too, and attempted to create Bono around to his perspective. "But he stored saying, 'No, it's shit.'" Another large-time filmmaker, Cameron Crowe, brings his extensive talents to 'Pearl Jam Twenty,' which uses the twentieth anniversary from the Dallas grunge band's formation to inform the storyline of their lightning-fast rise and lengthy coming-of-age. I had been never a Gem Jam guy myself -- "frat boy music," my buddies known as it in individuals days -- however i left the film with a brand new respect for Eddie Vedder and also the band, even when they never quite did have the ability to pull a U2 and reinvent themselves for any new trend. 4. Individuals are worried that another planet will invade our cosmic neighborhood, apparently. This really is this type of bizarre trend, I am unsure things to model of it, but you will find three movies this season by which another planet sidles as much as Earth, for better or worse (mainly worse). The very first was 'Transformers: Dark from the Moon' by which -- forgive me should you did not even notice this among all of the shooting -- the Decepticons beam their destroyed home planet towards the fringe of Earth's atmosphere hoping of getting it cleared up through the entire captive people. Then there is 'Another Earth,' in which a twin copy in our home planet all of a sudden appears coming, compelling our ever-creative fellow homo sapiens to christen it "Earth 2." And today there's Lars Von Trier's 'Melancholia,' where a giant blue planet known as Melancholia all of a sudden jumps from behind the sun's rays and begins speeding toward us in a healthy clip of 60,000 miles per second. Does it pass us by, or swallow us up inside a terrifyingly unavoidable interplanetary apocalypse? Like I stated, it is a Lars Von Trier movie, what exactly do you consider? 5. Alexander Payne wears sleeping earplugs to parties. I have already stated just how much I loved 'The Descendants,' and also at Saturday night's Vanity Fair/Fox Searchlight party I grabbed the chance to express to its director -- simply to uncover he was putting on plane-style sleeping earplugs. I am speculating it is a tinnitus factor? Anyway, he appeared to comprehend things i stated -- though my full-body "I am not worthy" gesture most likely got the gist across anyway. Photo: AP

Girl Model
A Carnivalesque Films presentation in association with Dogwoof Films and POV. (International sales: Dogwoof, London.) Produced by David Redmond, Ashley Sabin. Directed, edited by David Redmond, Ashley Sabin; With: Ashley Arbaugh, Nadya Vall.As unaffected and fat-free as the would-be superstars it profiles, the intrepid "Girl Model" gets inside the virtual human trafficking of beautiful young Russians into the netherworld of the Japanese modeling market, tracking one young blonde Siberian's experience from breathless hopeful to damaged dreamer. Broadcast on PBS is assured, but the vaguely salacious nature of story, and the tenacity of its directors, could help further advance a doc that manages to balance guileless objectivity with a very determined point of view. Using no narration and limited titles, helmers David Redmon and Ashley Sabin open their gritty verite drama with a fantastically bleak shot overlooking the Siberian city where the story begins, and then move inside where it's warm -- a modeling meat-market that draws hundreds of young Russian girls hoping to hit the big time, parading their skinny innocence around in bargain-basement bathing suits. They all dream of being chosen to go to Japan, where work is guaranteed and a bright future is promised, both of which, not unexpectedly, turn out to be figments. But while Sabin and Redmon never actually expose anything -- the slippery male characters they interview reveal little that's overtly illicit, not even their perpetual pipeline into impoverished Russian youth -- it doesn't take a sommelier to detect the piquant bouquet of arch criminality. The girl at the center of "Girl Model" is 13-year-old Nadya Vall, a willowy candidate whose childlike looks make her a shoo-in for the youth-obsessed Japanese market and whose consequent travails are chronicled by Sabin and Redmon, from Siberia to Tokyo and a series of misadventures that seem built into the system. But where Nadya is the picture of innocence and aspiration, ex-model Ashley Arbaugh is something else. The film's most intriguing and enigmatic character, Arbaugh now wrangles young girls for the Russian agency run by a shady customer named Tigran, and his Japanese counterpart, known as "Messiah" (a Japanese mogul who "really likes models," as Arbaugh says, in the film's most loaded moment). While "Girl Model" falls a bit short in the delivery of hard facts and incriminating evidence, it more than makes up for that in the knotty psychological profile of Arbaugh, whose own video-diary entries from the mid'-90s -- when she was modeling -- provide a haunted glimpse into exploited youth. A visit to Arbaugh's home in Connecticut, a spacious, rambling modernist dwelling with all the warmth of a bus station, is a creepfest: A pair of baby dolls sit upright on the couch in a living room devoid of almost all other decor. Arbaugh comments that she thought it was appropriate when she bought the house to buy the dolls, too. She has an overt desire for children and an apparent inability to have them; her need is palpable and pitiful, and the doll sequence has the mind reeling. Still, Arbaugh continues to help funnel young girls into a business that chews them up and spits them out. "Girl Model" isn't judgmental, except by implication, but it is a bit heartbreaking, not just about the girls and their plight, but about the desperation behind their families' willingness to send children into a game so rigged against them. Their contracts, we're told, routinely forbid them to gain weight, or inches -- and since adolescents who don't grow are either sick or dying, this is clearly a way to get rid of them for any reason whatsoever. Nadya ultimately doesn't suffer irreparable damage, even if her dreams do, but what she symbolizes about the global culture's idolization of youth and beauty -- and its lack of remorse in exploiting it -- speaks volumes. Production values are understandably, and perhaps appropriately, horrid at times, given the seat-of-the-pants filmmaking and the nature of the characters and their story.camera, Redmond, Sabin; music, Matthew Dougherty, Eric Taxier.
